Sealless Mag Drive Pumps for DEF/AdBlue Applications

From agricultural equipment, to construction machinery, to commercial fleets, diesel exhaust fluid (DEF, also known as AdBlue) is crucial to a full range of operations. Because DEF/AdBlue requires careful handling, choosing the right pumps for these systems is also crucial. Finish Thompson’s complete line of sealless magnetic drive pumps offers the ideal solution. Built for heavy-duty chemical transfer, these pumps offer reliability that improves safety and reduces cost for DEF/AdBlue applications.

Typical Applications

  • DEF dispensing systems
  • Portable DEF transfer
  • Container-to-container transfer
  • Blending
  • Pumping DI water

Pump Details

DB Series, SP Series

Magnetically coupled, sealless centrifugal pumps. While NOT manufactured from FDA compliant materials, Finish Thompson DB Series and SP Series pumps are designed from the ground up to pump corrosive chemicals.
Features

  • No mechanical seal – Powerful rare earth magnetic drive system eliminates the troublesome mechanical seal.
  • Corrosion resistant – Engineered for the most aggressive liquids, manufactured from polypropylene or PVDF.
  • Run dry ability – Makes them less prone to operator error or system upset.
  • Self-priming optionSP Series pumps can lift fluid from as deep as 25 feet (7.6 meters) below the pump or can pull liquid out of the top of a tank eliminating through-the-sidewall bulkhead fittings.

MSDB Series

Features

  • Multi-stage design – to produce much higher heads at lower flow rates than similarly sized single-stage pumps.
  • Performance – Heads up to 300 feet (91.5 meters) are possible, with a minimum flow rate of one gpm (0.23 m3/hr) and a maximum flow rate of 69 gpm (15.7 m3/hr).
  • No mechanical seal – Powerful rare earth magnetic drive system eliminates the troublesome mechanical seal.
PFS series drum pump

Drum Pumps

Finish Thompson drum pumps are extremely versatile and are not just for use in in drums. A wide range of tube lengths allow them to be used in drums, barrels, totes, IBCs (intermediate bulk containers) and other container sizes.
Features

  • PP, PVDF or 316SS tubes – Select based on your application
  • Built-in hose and cord clips – Specific models
  • ODP (open drip proof), TEFC and air motor drive options – lithium ion battery powered motor on select models

PF Series

  • High performance sealless pump
  • Unique double suction impeller provides high flow rates and high discharge pressure
  • Viscosity up to 2,000 cP
  • Acids, bases, plating solutions, water treatment chemicals, cleaners

EF Series

  • An ideal replacement for hand pumps
  • Integral strainer (EFP/EFV only)
  • Built-in hose, cord clips (EFP/EFV only)
  • Light acids and bases, plating solutions, sodium hypochlorite, cleaners, coolants

SF Series

  • Sealless high-performance design for maximum uptime
  • Dual impeller options provide either high flow or high head
  • 40 mm (1.6”) tube diameter to accommodate smaller bung openings
  • Five distinct models to suit a full range of applications

Sealless Mag Drive Pumps Prove Ideal for DEF Systems

Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) has become an essential product for truck fleets and operations that support diesel-powered equipment. Due to its corrosive nature and high purity, DEF must be stored and handled carefully. Finish Thompson’s sealless magnetic drive pumps are ideal for these applications – for two reasons.

Reason #1: Comprehensive Solutions

“We have solutions for pumping everything from a five-gallon bucket to bulk supply tanks,” explains Will Weathers, Finish Thompson Regional Manager. “Our broad range of products will suit portable, bulk, and drum dispensing systems. Finish Thompson pumps can service commercial fleets, agricultural equipment, construction equipment, as well as retail dispensing operations.”

“Our SP Series self-priming pumps are perfect for medium- to high-flow requirements,” notes Weathers. “For applications that require pulling from the bottom of a tank, we have our DB Series. And for emptying totes and other portable systems, we have drum pumps. Companies appreciate that we can provide solutions for all their systems. It simplifies the supply chain.”

Reason #2: Sealless Technology

When exposed to air, DEF crystalizes. If the pumps used to transfer this fluid feature mechanical seals, the DEF will eventually crystalize around the seal. This breaks down the seal, damaging the pump and creating leaks that pose environmental and safety hazards and additional maintenance work.

“Each Finish Thompson mag drive pump features sealless technology,” Weathers reports. “These pumps eliminate that exposure to the environment that causes leaks. This is a major advantage – a real game changer for DEF operations.”

Equipping DEF System Manufacturers to Reach New Markets

Fireball Equipment Ltd. specializes in commercial and industrial fuel and lubrication storage and dispensing systems. “With emissions regulations ramping up over the years, Fireball is expanding to larger applications and a bigger customer base,” reports the local distributor. “Fireball needed a pump that could handle the engineering requirements for new on-site DEF dispensing systems.”

Andrew Gendre, Mechanical Engineer at Fireball, explains, “We have used Finish Thompson’s DB6H pump for our smaller commercial dispense module – designed for use by municipalities, construction sites, and fuel retailers for highway vehicles. This pump provides the low-maintenance benefits of a magnetic sealless pump with the flow performance required for the smaller DEF tanks in these applications – economically. And now we’ve expanded operations and have used a multi-stage MSDB pump for our larger modules, designed for use by mine sites to fill haul trucks and other heavy construction equipment.”

“The Finish Thompson sealless magnetic drive pumps are a great fit for DEF applications,” Gendre reports. “They improve productivity by providing the higher pressures and flow required to fill larger equipment tanks (400+ liters / 100+ gallons) in short time periods (4 to 5 minutes) through the specialized DEF filling nozzles used on this equipment.”

“Fireball has made sales to new markets that wouldn’t have been possible without the Finish Thompson MSDB pump,” reports the distributor.

“The sealless design of our pumps makes them perfect for Fireball’s applications,” notes Juan Carlos Martinez, Finish Thompson Regional Manager. “Some of the mining locations using Fireball’s products are in remote areas. The pumps need to be low maintenance due to the investment required to reach the area for repairs or replacement. The pumps also need to be able to work reliably when only used intermittently. Finish Thompson sealless magnetic drive pumps, with no mechanical seal, meet these requirements.”

The distributor notes, “DEF is notorious for finding its way through connections and seals. Fireball liked the idea of a sealless mag-drive pump, which would result in reduced maintenance work hours, fewer part replacements, and definitely fewer issues with DEF seepage. They were also impressed with Finish Thompson’s five-year warranty. No other manufacturer can top that for a mag drive pump.”

“Finish Thompson has provided impeccable support and timely response through the entire process,” adds the distributor, “Every design that Fireball has sent our way, someone at Finish Thompson has been there to respond and provide a solution.”
